Canadian Champion - C.J. Strider CGC TDI
(CJ is retired and enjoying
his golden years at North Country)

North Country Labradors was established in 1998 with CJ Strider. I’m
not sure when I decided that I wanted a Lab, but in 1997 I started to look
locally for a yellow male Labrador. I found a breeder who was about to have
a litter and put a deposit down for a male. When the litter arrived I had
my choice of the males and CJ caught my eye.
I have two sons to whom I gave the task of naming the
new puppy. However, as with most things and young children, they couldn’t
agree on a name! So I decide that if they wouldn’t agree, I would have to
solve the problem myself. My boy’s names are Corey and James, so I used the
first initial of each boy’s first name to come up with CJ. That is only
half the name though. The other half comes from the Tolkien Trilogy, The
Lord of The Rings. The first time I read the books, I thought that the
name and character of Strider was so cool! I knew that when I had another
dog, I would name him Strider. Because I had given the boys the task of
naming the dog, I felt I should let them try. When that didn’t workout as I
had hoped, I turned to the next best thing which was to use parts of their
own names, get them to agree, and add the Strider to complete the name.
As CJ grew, I began to feel that this dog was special
in many ways, so I had several people evaluate him and give me an opinion on
his quality. It was decided to try him in the show ring and see how he
would compete. Under the guidance of handler Mary Grill of Lapeer,
Michigan, he took a three point major in his third show and in his fourth
show he took two points. He has since gone reserve many times but has not
gotten back into the points.
I decided to send him to Canada to see how he would compete there. In
four shows he completed his Canadian title, finishing with thirteen points.
CJ also acquired his AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate and an AKC Therapy
Dog International certificate. He has a very gentle, kind and loving
nature! CJ is retired and enjoying his golden years here at North
Country.
